Land Keepers Society

A Grassroots Movement to protect Property Rights and Food Security

The project that sounded the alarm

Our Mission

We are committed to achieving a balance between societal goals, property owners' rights to operate profitably, and the needs of the land and its inhabitants. This is accomplished through our recognition of environmental initiatives and other land use pressures.

Farmers need our help

For a while now government decisions have posed a real threat to farms all over the province of BC. For years farmers have cooperated with all manner of policies imposed on them while footing the bill for related upgrades. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been enough, and the squeeze is now becoming a problem for the business of farming, ranching and fishing. Citizens are deeply concerned with the lack of justifications for some of these policies, as well as a lack of transparency with the community.

Land Keepers Society was formed in 2023 to hold government members accountable and to provide education and support to property owners struggling to stay in business. There is nothing more important now than protecting food security for future generations. The time to step up for those who feed us is now.

British Columbia is mobilizing

Education

The time has come for the people to no longer be complacent. We now take information into our own hands, learning about the way government works, land rights throughout history, and our symbiotic relationship with Mother Nature.

Independent Science

We hire independent scientists to investigate the justifications for policies. We take full ownership of getting to the bottom of the science when it is used as ‘supporting evidence’ to pass laws that destroy properties.

Public Inquiry

We get informed, and then we get loud. We ask the challenging questions of the public servants who work for us. Our volunteers organize town halls to discuss the changes that will affect us. We engage with independent journalists to report on both sides of the story.

Our Commitment: In British Columbia, government initiatives involving privately owned land must not jeopardize these invaluable resources. We firmly believe that collaborative efforts are essential for progress. Through open communication and cooperation, we establish a foundation of trust, paving the way for mutually beneficial solutions. We are dedicated to safeguarding landowners' interests while advocating for harmonious outcomes for all.

We Protect the Future of BC's Private Lands

We Protect Generational Stewardship

We are committed to preserving the legacy of private lands, respecting their long-term use and grandfathered status. We firmly believe that government should show unwavering respect for private lands that have stood the test of time and hold a Grandfathered status. Additionally, we uphold the value of generational stewardship, recognizing that land nurtured and worked upon by successive generations of farm families holds a distinguished and revered place within both the local community and the broader business landscape.

We Protect Ecosystems and Wildlife

We collaborate with the government to establish fair regulations, empowering farm owners to manage their land smoothly without the overwhelming burden of sudden and confusing rules. We advocate for close government collaboration with farms that raise domestic animals and are mindful of wildlife on their land, as we believe that sustained growth for business and farming communities is achievable through collaboration. We believe nature and farming are not at odds with each other, but instead are mutually beneficial.

“Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place.”

Frederic Bastiat (2006). “The Law”, p.6, Cosimo, Inc.

Property owners have the right to be profitable, and food security depends on it.

Land Keepers Society sprung to action when it was discovered the Cowichan Bay Estuary was to be flooded, affecting a farm that supplies forage for 3 dairy farms and horse stables in the Cowichan Valley. The destruction of these farms would impact the availability and price of food in the valley. We have been working with lawyers to stop a decision made without the consultation of the community, which is unlawful. As we gathered support from farmers and ranchers all over the province, we soon found out the problems were everywhere. Too many farmers (and fishers!) are on the verge of closing down because of a barrage of government initiatives that claim to be based on science but take no account of the economic impact on thousands of people.

Join us as we continue to bring to light the real struggles of property owners, and take concrete action to demand that government respects our right to prosperity.

Land Keepers take on the legal battles on behalf of farmers so they can keep feeding us.

We are run entirely by volunteers. We have conscientiously decided to pool all the money we generate to pay for lawyers and independent scientists. We need to communicate our concerns and defend our rights through legal avenues. This is the format most likely to create change in government organizations. We have already received generous donations from farmers and concerned citizens throughout BC. Our President Jack Mcleod has used his seniority in the industry, long-term relationships and benevolent spirit to acquire key players to support our cause. But the fight ain’t over yet! There are lots of ways you can help: become a member, become a volunteer, or donate. Without your support, we cannot do what we’re doing. Whatever way you choose to help, know that you will be playing your part in the protection of food security, peaceful enjoyment of personal property, and the right to prosperity.
